An Auto-Maintained Site

Now that you are familiar with what a dynamic site is, SitesDynamic wants you to see what happens when it is taken to the next level.

Normally when a site is created you basically pay for a set amount of pages that do a set amount of things. For instance, if you had a "Home" page, a "Products" page, a "Services" page, an "About Us" page and a "Contact Us" page, you would have five fixed pages with five specific content categories. Once you wrote the content and your designer developed the pages, your site would be complete. If you had a database driving some of the content (as mentioned) on the previous pages), you may have more pages generated but you still had a finite amount of development done for the implementation of your site. So here you are a few months later very satisfied with what you have online and you need to make a simple change to some of the content. You may want to change a price. You may need to change the company phone number. You may even need to update some photos. Without some forethought you will be stuck calling your original site developer (or maybe even a different one since they seem to fall by the wayside often) and paying their minimum fee (usually two hours) to go online to make the change. Then you are also stuck to their time schedule for when it can be completed. Maybe, however, your developer thought a little bit in advance and provided you with the entire site on CD so you can make any changes you want to at any time. You get the CD and stare at the contents wondering what the gibberish is these developers create this stuff with. Your developer made the assumption you had no problems doing that. If you don't, great! But most do not and, more importantly, why would you want to spend your valuable time trying to learn this new "language" just so you can update a price?

Let's leave with one final scenario. Remember back on page two you had a bunch of awards given to your company over time and you wanted them to be displayed in a small portion of the screen on your main page? What if you got another one and needed to add it. What would be the process? You will still have to call the developer of your site who would add this new information to your database. This would be much less work since you wouldn't have to create a new page to support it (see A Database-Driven Site) but you still have not been provided with a simple way to update your site. Now imagine being provided a link to a page which you log in to and then have full control over all of the content - the text, images, colors, etc. Now you just click on "Add" to add a new "award", add the information, press "Submit" and bingo, 'tis done. Now you begin to see the power of an auto-maintained site.
